What is the wall made of?
Skin is not a wrapper. Skin is a structure. Structures are built from something.

The chemical behind the scratch
So far we have talked about the wall. Now the itch itself.
The signal
IL-31: the molecule that tells your dog to scratch
When the immune system finds something it does not like, it releases interleukin-31. Nerve endings in the skin read it as one instruction: scratch. It is such a reliable trigger that vets can now inject an antibody whose only job is to intercept it. The crack lets the allergen in, the allergen raises IL-31, and IL-31 is what the itch actually is.
The IL-31 switch works the same way in every mammal. That is why a 2026 veterinary feeding trial at China Agricultural University matters here. Hyaluronic acid plus a collagen-rich ingredient, fed daily for weeks, then measured.
